Mondi: faster training and reduced unplanned downtime
“New operators have already used the knowledge file very intensively and are therefore able to work independently sooner. As a result, the onboarding process has become significantly shorter.”

“I see the operators using the software frequently. They navigate very easily to the information they need.”

About Mondi Heerlen
Mondi Heerlen is part of Mondi, a global leader in the sustainable paper and packaging industry. Mondi Heerlen produces release liner, a product used, among other things, for the production of feminine hygiene products.
Inexperienced operators lacking the correct knowledge
Faster training and reduced unplanned downtime: those were the objectives of the production department at Mondi Heerlen. In recent years, experienced operators have retired or changed roles. Motivated but less experienced operators took their place. Consequently, the need to transfer knowledge quickly and easily grew steadily. After seeing a demo of ELICIT, Mondi decided to launch a pilot project with ELICIT.
Effective knowledge transfer with ELICIT
Together with Mondi Heerlen, ELICIT developed a knowledge model for the coaters—machines that apply adhesive to large rolls of paper. For these machines, the various product qualities are closely interconnected. ELICIT captured this interplay in the knowledge model, giving operators greater insight into the effect of an action. “When a malfunction occurs, it is important that the operator can determine what is happening and what the cause is,” says Operations Manager Guy Vlecken. Thanks to the knowledge model, operators now know even better what to do, even with different types of coatings.
To develop the model, Bauke, ELICIT’s knowledge analyst, interviewed several colleagues from Mondi Heerlen. Werner Wetzels, Production Trainer at Mondi Heerlen, now continues to update the knowledge file independently. He praises the user-friendliness of ELICIT. “I see the operators using the software frequently. They navigate very easily to the information they need.” Previously, operators had to look up information at a different location when a problem occurred. Now, the information they need is available right next to the production line. “The fact that it can be viewed so quickly and easily next to the line is a very big advantage,” says Wetzels. Because the production department enjoys working with ELICIT, work has already begun during the pilot on creating two additional knowledge models for other machines at Mondi Heerlen.
The result: faster training, less downtime, higher efficiency
With the knowledge file, colleagues and new employees have a better overview of the process. With ELICIT, Mondi Heerlen has a user-friendly platform for capturing and sharing knowledge. As a result, the company can train employees faster and achieve reduced unplanned downtime, which saves the company time and money.
