The origins of ELICIT

During his doctoral research at the University of Twente, Wouter Schotborgh investigated how to extract experiential knowledge from the mind of an expert. He spoke with two hundred experts: from wafer steppers to steam turbines, with experience ranging from a few years to over 49 years. He consistently discovered the same pattern: every expert flawlessly recognizes when something goes right or wrong and knows exactly what to do. This combination of signal and action proved to be capturable through an average of 110 targeted questions in 5 structured interviews. That discovery became the ELICIT method.

In 2011, Wouter founded ELICIT B.V. In 2017, he joined forces with Herman Ouwerkerk, leading to the creation of ELICIT Online: the platform that makes captured knowledge available on the shop floor in more than 30 languages. We have now applied the method more than 600 times, ranging from medium-sized companies to well-known multinationals.
